Real Music

Is it me, or where did the real music go? Today’s music has subjected us to being shallow or narrow-minded. Where did the lyrics of love go? Have we been brainwashed into thinking making songs about love is a punk thing too do? Is it that people don’t make music about love any more because they feel it’s a feminine thing to do? What happened?

It seems to me today’s music is about sex, violence, drugs, and possessions. The real music you barely hear. Real music like artist named Raheem DeVaughn, Chrisette Michele, Melaine Fiona, Ledisi, Amel Larrieux, Goapele, Jill Scott, and etc. Some of these people sing about things of the heart. Real music comes not just in the form of soulful music but also in hip hop. People such as Common, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Little Brother, Nas, A Tribe Called Quest, Slum Village, 2pac, and etc. Today’s music is garage. The music made today, makes us seem ignorant, and we accept this. The music being played now is so shallow and one sided. It doesn’t allow us to stimulate our minds. I know I am tired of seeing and hearing the same things. The videos are even worst, some big booty chick, fancy cars and house that majority of them don’t even own. But to get completely technical majority of these entertainers don’t even live the life they talking about. For example, Plies the rapper claims to be some hardcore thug but yet Jamie Foxx put him out there as a fake who runs from anyone from the hood he claim to be from. Plies is a educated individual but yet he creates songs like he can’t even complete a sentence. Next example, rapper Rick Ross, Rick Ross took on the identity of another man who was a criminal to make himself look tough and try to pretend that he was this guy named Rick Ross, but he was actually a correction officer and in fact NOT a criminal. However, bullshit aside and back to the real music, where did it go? Have the music industry made that many puppets? If some of these people would stand up and not take the crap being given to them just because it’s a paycheck with a little bit of fame ,we can one day change the way the industry is, but it starts with the artist, and the people buying this nonsense. I just want the real music back. Songs like “The Light” by Common, “Closer” by Goapele, and “Passing Me By” by The Pharcyde. What is this crap they called music now and days? Who makes a song “Have a baby by me, be a millionaire”, is this all we are now and days? Are we that damn ignorant now and days? Do we not know what we are listening to or is it just all about the beat? Come on people actually pay attention to what you listening too, and not just hear it. When you don’t stimulate your brain, you will eventually kill off your brain cells making you dumber and dumber.

  2. Wow, you’ve done it again…hit the nail on the head.
Today’s music is all about ‘image’ being something you are not. Just like these cats on twitter tweeting about what they about to do, what they have, and what they have done…but never doing it…and living in mamaws basement. When I turn on the radio now I usually can only take 5 minutes of the torture. Techno, fillers and bs.
The great artists always are overlooked because the public is dumb enough to only support the foolishness. The industry will only do what the people tell it to…and they conitnue to listen to and support BS. We have the control…but don’t realize it, just like you said ignorance–
I must say..when I visit Philly, DC, Detroit I feel that they (select few) know and are in touch with good music. I hit their record stores and find artists I’ve never heard of, Eric Roberson, Dwele, Adrian Younge, Algebra and many others. They’re jazz clubs and lounges blaze the latest in common, bahamadia, nas, floetry, Jill Scott, but those places are in touch with their CULTURE. One must be conscious to support quality..and you definately are.
Thank you, Much love and keep writing, I’m loving it!

    • WOW! I must say you prove some good points in your comment. There are only certain cities that seem to embrace to the intellectual individuals, and I must say there are more out there then people think, but I think the nonconscious individuals are overpowering. I think Tom Joyner said it best when he said “Rappers today are ego rappers, and not conscious rappers and that is what the difference is”, He stated how rappers back in the day rapped about issues in the world, whereas rappers now and days rap about themselves, which I personally could careless to hear about because half of what they saying is not true anyway.

And as far as the radio…. GARBAGE!!!! I stay with my IPhone, IPod playing because radio stations are just not right! I swear I could be a radio station and play the same 10 songs on random. I mean honestly, I am a little sick and tired of hearing Drake, Rihanna, Nikki Minaj, Usher, and all the other nonsinging, nonrapping individuals. I mean SERIOUSLY talk about something other than yourselves.

And Adrian Younge…. Never heard of that person, but I will have to do some research on that one. I am all for REAL MUSIC.
